Do you breathe comfortably throughout the day but suddenly develop a blocked nose every night after switching on the air conditioner? You are not alone. Many people notice nasal congestion, dryness, sneezing, or difficulty breathing through the nose when sleeping in an air-conditioned room.

The AC itself does not necessarily cause a disease. However, the cool, dry air and changes in humidity may irritate the inside of the nose in some people. In addition, existing allergies, sinus problems, or nasal conditions can become more noticeable at night.

How Can AC Make Your Nose Feel Blocked?

Air conditioners cool the air and can reduce indoor humidity. As a result, the air inside an air-conditioned room may become cooler and drier than the surrounding environment.

Should You Turn Off the AC Completely?

Air conditioning can make sleeping more comfortable, especially in hot and humid weather. The goal is usually to identify what is triggering your symptoms.

For example, you may benefit from adjusting the temperature, preventing direct airflow onto your face, improving humidity, or checking the cleanliness of the AC system. If you have an underlying allergy or nasal condition, treating that condition may be more helpful than simply avoiding the AC.

When Should You Consult an ENT Specialist?

You should consider consulting an ENT specialist if you have:

  • A blocked nose almost every night
  • Persistent congestion for weeks
  • Difficulty sleeping because of nasal blockage
  • Repeated sneezing and nasal itching
  • Frequent sinus infections
  • Facial pain or pressure
  • Reduced sense of smell
  • One-sided nasal blockage
  • Recurrent nosebleeds
  • Symptoms that do not improve despite simple changes
